Housekeeping: Publishing & Patreon

PUBLISHING: WHY INDIE?

The Mists of Aldruin world is expansive, and here at Sword & Board, we have big plans for its future. The Gods Chronicle will encompass several books, have accompanying music, and games. As a disabled writer, creating accessible media is incredibly important to me (L.J.) and part of the bedrock philosophy behind Sword & Board. We intend to have audiobooks and large print editions. We have also cultivated relationships with small businesses, from our artwork to our editing, that we would never have been able to within traditional publishing.

PATRONAGE

Patronage of the arts is an ancient custom that used to grant artists and creators greater financial stability (even if it created a whole lot of other headaches). Patreon allows for a return of that concept. Book sales fluctuate, and while Patreon pledges do too, there is greater stability found in patron pledges than book sales. Patreon is the most accessible form of patronage I’ve found. It creates a platform for interaction and community, as well as author accountability. In addition to book sales, it helps create a base for which Sword & Board can begin other projects, commission new artwork, and support travel to cons and book signings (another benefit of nontraditional publishing: more control over where book signing events happen).

If you would like more information regarding Patreon, patronage, or any of the other topics above, please comment or email L.J.

Thank you for reading,

L.J.
